Qualifying as a Surf Lifeguard

To be a qualified lifeguard you must be 14 years or older and pass your Surf Lifeguard Award exam.
The exam comprises of the following:

400m pool swim in under 9 minutes.
Run/swim/run in the surf.
Resuscitation test.
Rescue test.
Theory questions.

Each season active Surf Lifeguards must perform a refresher test. This includes a swim, resuscitation test and first aid questions. It is not designed to fail people but to ensure their fitness and knowledge is up to the required standard.

Social Membership

If you are a keen beach goer who wants to spend time at the surf club without being a lifeguard you can sign up as a social member which gives you the advantages of using the facilities and attending all social events / functions.

Patrol Support

Members who don’t want to complete there Lifeguard award have the option to attend patrols as a patrol support. This means you get to assist with the set up and pack down of patrol and the general running and logistics of the patrol without the water components.

Please check out our Patrol Support page for further information.

Sporting

If you’re the athletic type, Surf Life Saving has a range of sporting activities on offer where you can choose to compete or just spend some time paddling around on craft.

At St Kilda we have a variety of competing options from racing IRBs to paddling surf skis, 4 man canoes and Knee boards.

We also have some very keen members who stick to the sand when competing whether its beach flags, relays, sprints or a 2km run.

Call Out Team

In the Otago area, Surf lifesaving NZ runs an IRB Callout Team which has members from each surf club who are on call 24 hours a day 7 days a week who are trained to a high skill level ready to respond to after hours and out of area callouts whether it may be for a swimmer or surfer caught in a rip, to a boat in distress off the coast of Dunedin or a search for a missing kayaker.

This team is something everybody who is a qualified lifeguard can apply for and run through the application process.
