Thinking of getting your children involved with Junior Surf? (Nippers)
See below to check out how you can join!
About us
We are a volunteer organisation with the goal of helping the community enjoy our beach safely. While we aim to protect the members of the community in and around the surf, we are always looking for new people to train and equip. One way we do this is through our junior surf programme, which is run by qualified lifeguards and parental volunteers.
Our lifeguards are trained to the New Zealand Surf Life Saving standard and are always looking to pass on their knowledge to others. Because of this dedication many lives have been saved over the years, this is a great environment to train up our juniors.
Getting Involved
Junior surf (AKA The Nippers) is a aimed at children ages 7-13. Once children turn 14 they can become a lifeguard or patrol support, you can find more information about this on our website.
Children under the age of 7 are welcome to join in with the juniors but they will need to have a parent or caregiver with them and be willing to go into the water.
Parents can become lifeguards if they are interested, however there are other areas you can help out in this is not your thing. This could just be bringing along the occasional batch of muffins!
Our Goals for Junior Surf
These are the three areas that we believe are important for the junior’s confidence in the surf
Fun
We understand the importance of building up children’s skills and confidence in the water, at St Kilda we believe the best way to achieve this is by having as much fun as possible! We aim to make the Saturday sessions, trainings, and competitions fun by incorporating games, food, and getting our lifeguards involved.
St Kilda also runs a number of club events throughout the season such as the Christmas party and trips to local beaches. These are a lot of fun as our members have great local knowledge of our coasts.
Skills
Juniors learn techniques that will firstly keep them safe in the surf but also skills enable them to help others around them. The skills we teach are taught through lessons in surf safety, games, and friendly competition. Through this they are able to work towards awards and badges. This involves swimming in the surf tasks as well as trying out body boards and nippers boards.
Competitions
At St Kilda we love to keep the other clubs on their toes. Competitions run throughout the season at both a regional and national level. This involves competing against other clubs in swimming, board paddling, beach sprints and their many other races to choose from. Competitions are a lot of fun and a great chance to get to know other members of the club. Dates for competitions can be found on our website or the Surf Lifesaving New Zealand site.
Weekly surf session
Every Saturday during the surf season we meet at the surf club at 12.30-1.30pm for ‘Nippers’. This is a combination of a fun/social time and skill learning. Parents are more than welcome to bring along baking for the kids to eat afterwards!
