A Brief History of the St Kilda Surf Life Saving Club
We have on the left a plaque commemorating the life of William 'Bill' Black who sadly lost his life in a shark attack while competing for St Kilda Surf Club.
On the right we have a plaque commemorating the life of James 'Jim' Purdue, who sadly lost his life while training in a four man canoe.
Back in the 1900's swimming in the ocean was illegal, protests around this led to the Pacific Bathing Club which eventually spawned the St Kilda & St Clair Surf Clubs. Originally, the site of the St Kilda Surf Club held some surf life saving equipment on along the bank, which lead to a shed being build and years later the shed was replaced by a building where the current club sits today.
Over the years the building has grown and changes it shape. Today it is one building with a storage shed, club room with function area, watch house and showers. Years before, it housed 3 separate buildings and a watch tower.
Most of the club photos and records were destroyed by a fire in the 1960's - As you enter you can still see some remains of the original beams
Today, we're a thriving club with a mixed group of members. We have a strong focus on competitions, being social and protecting our local beaches!
